Romance gets plenty of attention in films, songs and advice columns. The friend who checks in, the family member who shows up, or the community that knows your name can matter just as much.

Different relationships offer different things

A friend may know your history; a sibling may share everyday responsibilities; a community may help you feel part of something larger. These bonds need not compete with romantic relationships to count.

There is no required life sequence

Being single, ending a relationship or not wanting romance does not make you incomplete. Close bonds can grow through friendship, family and community at any age.

Invest in the care already around you

Notice who helps you feel respected and more yourself. A small message, shared meal or honest conversation can strengthen a bond. You can also make room for new connection through interests and communities that matter to you.
