When a friend is hurting over someone who does not feel the same, you may want to fix it for them. You do not have to. Listening, keeping them company and being honest can mean more than having an answer.

Listen before advising

Ask what would help right now: company, distraction, or space to talk. Avoid telling them to “just move on” or promising that the other person will change their mind.

Be kind and clear about boundaries

You can validate the hurt while discouraging repeated unwanted contact. “I know you care about them. They asked for space, and we should respect that. I can stay with you while this feels hard.”

Know your own limits

Supporting a friend does not mean being available at every moment or carrying the situation alone. Encourage them to connect with other trusted people or a professional if the distress is affecting daily life.
