Sometimes a longing for a particular person sits beside a longing for closeness in general. Both can be true. Naming the needs underneath a feeling may help you choose a response that cares for you and respects others.

Ask what you are missing

Are you drawn to this person's specific qualities, or are you mainly craving company, reassurance or touch? There is no wrong answer; the question may reveal more than the label does.

Find connection in more than one place

If loneliness is present, romantic pursuit is not the only possible response. A conversation with a friend, a group activity or time with family can meet some needs without asking one person to meet them all.

Let a relationship be a choice

A healthy relationship is not a cure for loneliness or a requirement for worth. Give yourself time to decide whether you want this connection for who the person is and how you relate, not only for the fear of being alone.
